These are not the same thing

Petty and high maintenance get used as though they were interchangeable insults for the same person. They describe completely different behaviours, and plenty of people are firmly one and not remotely the other.

Petty is about conflict. Remembering the exact wording of something said months ago. Screenshotting for the archive. Replying “k.” with intent. Moving an object back to where it belongs as a form of communication.

High maintenance is about standards. Knowing precisely how you want things and being unwilling to pretend otherwise. Sending something back. An order with amendments. Opinions about the temperature of a room.

One is a conflict style. The other is a preference profile. Someone can be the most easygoing person you know about restaurants and still be keeping a scoreboard about who last emptied the dishwasher.

The four combinations

PettyHigh maintenanceWhat that makes you
LowLowGenuinely easygoing. Rarer than people claim
HighLowThe Grudge Keeper. Will eat anywhere. Remembers everything
LowHighThe Specification. High standards, no scoreboard
HighHighThe Full Production. Never forgot a booking in their life

The Grudge Keeper is the most underrated of the four and mildly the most alarming, because there is no warning. Someone who is difficult about restaurants at least announces themselves. Someone who is agreeable about everything and quietly maintaining a ledger does not.

Being high maintenance is mostly fine

This is the one part worth taking seriously.

Having specific preferences is not a character flaw. Knowing that you cannot function below a certain temperature, or that you need three days’ notice before plans, or that the coffee has to be a particular way, is just self-knowledge. Most of the people described as low maintenance are simply people who have not thought about what they want.

It becomes difficult in exactly one circumstance: when the preferences are expected to be guessed.

Stating that you need notice before plans is easy to accommodate. Being visibly disappointed that somebody did not intuit it is not, because there was no way for them to get it right. The preference was never the problem. The requirement to read minds was.

The same structure applies to pettiness. Noticing everything is genuinely a skill, and people who notice are usually the ones holding the whole thing together. Keeping a scoreboard about what you noticed is a separate decision, and it is the one that costs something.

When petty stops being funny

Pettiness is largely harmless and often quite entertaining. Two things move it out of that territory.

When it is the only way something gets said. Moving an object back as a statement is funny once. As the primary communication method for a grievance, it means the grievance never gets addressed, because the other person is being asked to decode furniture.

When the scoreboard becomes the relationship. Keeping rough track of who did what is normal. Being able to produce a ledger under pressure means a lot of energy has gone into maintaining it, and that energy came from somewhere.

The test is simple: is it a joke you make, or a thing you act on? The first is a personality. The second is a habit worth watching.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between petty and high maintenance?

Petty is about conflict: keeping score, small retaliations, remembering exactly what was said. High maintenance is about standards: knowing precisely how you want things. They are unrelated, and plenty of people are strongly one and not the other.

Is being high maintenance a bad thing?

Not on its own. Having specific preferences is self-knowledge. It only causes difficulty when the preferences are expected to be guessed rather than stated, because then there is no way for anyone to get it right.

Am I petty or just observant?

Noticing is not pettiness. Acting on what you noticed, in small and deniable ways, is. The useful question is whether it is a joke you make or a thing you do.

Can you stop being petty?

Realistically the noticing does not stop, and it does not need to. What changes is what happens next. Saying the thing directly, once, removes almost all of it, because most pettiness is a grievance that never found a route to being expressed.

Is high maintenance the same as having standards?

Largely, yes, and the label is mostly applied by people inconvenienced by someone else’s clarity. The distinction worth making is between preferences you state and preferences you expect others to detect.

What does the test actually measure?

Twelve questions, six for each trait, scored separately and plotted on two independent dials. You also get an archetype for the combination and a list of the things you admitted to, which is the part people tend to screenshot.

Does the petty test store my answers?

No. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is stored or sent anywhere.
