How this zodiac compatibility calculator works

Most compatibility tools online run on a lookup table someone wrote by hand, which is why the same pairing often returns different scores on different sites. This one calculates from four traditional astrological inputs, applied the same way every time.

1. The aspect

The angular distance between two signs on the zodiac wheel, and the single biggest factor. Signs 120 degrees apart form a trine, the most harmonious angle. Signs 90 degrees apart form a square, the classic tension angle. Signs directly opposite share a modality but nothing else, which produces strong attraction alongside real friction.

2. The element

Fire, earth, air and water. Same-element pairs understand each other instinctively. Fire and air feed each other, as do earth and water. Fire and water, or earth and air, take more translation.

3. The ruling planet

Each sign answers to a planet, and those planets have traditional relationships of their own. Venus and Mars pull toward each other. Saturn and Uranus pull apart. This is the input that gives each pairing its own character rather than a generic element score.

4. The modality
